How to get jobs that hire people with a criminal background

In a fair and just world, people with criminal records shouldn’t be discriminated against in their job search. Unfortunately, our world is not perfect and folks needs to prepare themselves to face up the challenges of getting a new job. Currently there are certain parts of our society that are more accommodating to people with criminal background. Applying for such jobs will make it easier for you to land one. Below are 5 tips that will make it easier for you to get hired.

Tip #1: Get a pardon

Some companies just don’t accept people with criminal records, Period. The best solution is to get  Canadian pardons through companies such as the National Pardon Centre. What they will do for you is to suspend your record so that you appear to have no criminal record against your name. Of course, not all folks will be applicable for such pardon but it is in your interest to find out if you can qualify for such a treatment.

Tip #2: Avoid applying to big companies

Every big company wants to keep their record spanking clean.They have huge PR machinery that will prevent their human resource departments for ever thinking about retiring somebody with a criminal background for an important position. Instead, go for smaller businesses where you can meet the owner and convince him or her to hire you.

Tip #3: Seek out companies which have joined reentry program

There are companies who have volunteered to participate in government programs that helped ex convicts find jobs. The Prison Entrepreneurship Program is one such example that is based in Houston. Each state runs its own variation of such programs and you will do well to find out which programs are available in your state. A variation of this tip is to try the state unemployment office whereby it will assign a case manger to help you find a job.

Tip #4: Work with a parole officer

Parole officers can help you in many ways. From resume writing to finding the right company to apply, they have a wealth of experience and network that you should leverage on. However, do note that you cannot choose the jobs they recommend. It is advisable that you take whatever they have and work your way up from there.

Tip #5: Use free lancer marketplaces to make money

If you really can’t find a job, the good news is that you can still make some money by selling your service. There are currently many marketplaces such as Elance, Fivver etc whereby you can offer to help people in various tasks from writing to web design to voice acting etc. If you are a more hands on type of person, TaskRabbit is another marketplace that you can try your luck on. Even with no jobs, a person can still make money online.
